THESE ARE THE THINGS

Early morning
As the profligate sun
Sheds its rays
On an unblinking world
We'll all go down together

It's unusual
To think of life as something real
Reality is more a rock
That doesn't change
Our lives have fluidity
A randomness
That frightens us
Into uniformity

They let him go
He was guilty
But now he was free
So an innocent man would die
He was happy at the time
But now
You wonder how he feels

In ancient times
Time flowed softly
Life and death
Were both brief moments
With little space in-between
Is it any different now?

In the aftermath
We still reside
The universe has changed
Yet we cannot see
What is taking place
But we believe that someday
We will

The necessities
We lack
Like watching
The stars
As they overwhelm the night sky
Or like
Leaving everything behind
To pursue a dream
These are the things
We lack
And we know it
